Shiatsu

Shiatsu is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy that has been formulated over the last hundred years from traditional Japanese massage which is a therapeutic massage.

Shiatsu literally means finger pressure and as such describes part of the therapy whereby natural body weight (finger, thumbs, elbows, forearms, feet and knees) is used in applying pressure to special points on the body. Shiatsu is combined with stretches, joint rotations and joint manipulation to give a treatment on a holistic level.

Shiatsu incorporates pressure, holding, rubbing or stretching techniques which can be deep and firm, but which are applied with sensitivity. Hava therapist will apply pressure using her fingers, thumbs or palms in a continuous rhythmic sequence. The pressure feels more localized, because unlike other types of massage e.g. Thai Massage, the finger pads are used to apply pressure for most of the treatment instead of the entire palm. Certain pressure points may feel tender, which some people describe it as "good pain". If you feel any discomfort or pain during the therapy, please tell our therapist and she will adjust the pressure so that it is comfortable to you. Most people say Shiatsu is as relaxing as a classic form of massage therapy. Unlike other forms of massage, no massage oil is required under Shiatsu, so you remain fully clothed during the therapy. You are suggested to wear comfortable clothes during treatment.

Shiatsu is a deeply relaxing experience and regular Shiatsu sessions help to prevent the buildup of stress. Common conditions helped by Shiatsu include:

  • Asthmatic symptoms
  • Depression and stress
  • Digestive problems
  • Joint pain and back pain
  • Menstrual problems
  • Migraine or headaches
  • Reduced mobility
  • Sports injuries
